Missions- Uganda

Missions

The Harpeth missions team is currently planning a trip to Uganda approximately August 4-20, 2009. We would be going as a part of Encounter Uganda, but will be assigned to work at the Kibbuse Vocational School in Nyamarwa.

No special skills are needed and everyone is welcome.

However, we will be hoping to recruit people with medical skills, basic carpentry skills, plumbing, electrical, sewing/tailoring, community health, etc. We will probably be capped at around 12 people and preparations will begin prior to the end of the year. If you are interested in finding out more about this trip, please contact Lonnie Hearne at 497-0569.

In June 2008 a team of 6 people went from Harpeth Community Church to the town of Hoima Uganda in a region known as Bunyoro-Kitara. They went with a team of 40 people from Christ Church at Rove Farm in Sewickley PA. Their mission was to build playgrounds at two orphanages and a clinic and to serve in a number of other ways.

In 2007 Harpeth Community Church helped fund the re-building of an orphanage in the remote village of Nalweyo. It had previously been mud and wattle huts.

During this trip we got to build a playground for these children and to give them pencils, shoes, and Harpeth Community Church T-shirts. We had hardly completed the playground equipment before it was covered with children.

Harpeth children made crosses with lollipops on them which we were able to pass out after one Sunday service in the village of Nyamarwa.

At one location we passed out "Harpeth Heroes" T-shirts which the children loved. They wanted Harpeth to know that they too are "Heroes" so they showed us how strong they were!

The house in the background is called Faith House which was the vision of an in country missionary. He envisioned a special center, just for kids, where they could show movies and have special activities.

The children of Nalweyo live in abject poverty.

When we were there, John Dodson looked into the nice concrete food storehouse that we had helped build. It was empty except for a couple of stalks of the small green bananas which are the primary food for these kids.

"A lot of people ask, "What would I do if I went, I really don't have any skills?"

These children need love as much as they need anything.

Many are aids orphans or orphaned because of the high mortality rate among people in Uganda.

While we there, one pastor came up and said, "Thank you for your presence." Thinking he had said "presents" we looked puzzled. He then continued "You preach loudly by your presence."

Harpeth people have a chance to once again minister by their presence in 2009. We will be going to the village of Nyamarwa to come alongside the people of the Kibbuse Vocational School. If you think you want to go, you need to pray, decide, and commit early.
